I swear we were just in the car with my sister and brother-in-law driving home with two squirmy little 2 pound, 4-month-old puppies. My sister and BIL have Lexie’s brother/littermate, Tate. It has been fun raising littermates together!
Tate is on the left and Lexie is on the right
Those 4-month-old, 2 pound puppies are now 4-year-old 8.5 pound (Lexie) and 12 pound (Tate) puppies!
Let’s be clear. Yes, they know they have a special connection. They have never forgotten each other’s smell or the fact that Tate dominates Lexie. Still. Lexie isn’t this way with any of the other dogs. Just Tate. It’s really cute!

Their personalities are similar yet so very different. Tate is outgoing and friendly which is typical of a Maltese personality. He learned to mind and train way earlier than Lexie too. Lexie is shyer and if she doesn’t know you, no way is she going to let you get near her. She will, however, bark you to death! The true epitome of all bark and no bite! Welllll….except that she still does play bite.

Tate will give you all kinds of kisses. Lexie looks at you like “we will be okay as long as you come nowhere near my snout. Mmmkay?”
Tate hated his crate and Lexie would still get in hers if I let her. Lexie is quite laid back where Tate is a little anxious. Tate bonded right away whereas Lexie took over a year to bond. Tate likes to please and Lexie thinks that’s a completely overrated concept!
My sister and I have often said we got each other’s dog. I was more like Tate growing up. I was a pleaser and wasn’t exactly laid back whereas my sister was more like Lexie. Laid back and an “I’ll get there when I get there” mentality.
Like I said, they have similarities too. Both are cuddle bugs. They look a lot alike when they have the same haircut. Lexie and Tate eat the same way and play similarly too. The only thing Lexie does differently is she still loves to play with toys on her back like a bear cub.
Both have the sweet temperament typical of Maltese and both are excellent guard dogs also very typical of Maltese.
This is how I wake up every morning as soon as my alarm goes off
Lexie, even at 4 years old, still is very puppy-like. She play bites, plays with toys on her back, has so much energy she wears me out and is scared to see herself in a mirror. She doesn’t like the camera or a cell phone. (Most all of these photos happened because I got very lucky). If you put your phone camera on reverse (like for a selfie) and point it at her so she can see herself, she runs for her life!
Joy. It’s what both puppies have brought to both individual families as well as our entire, whole family.
Happy Birthday, Lexie and Tate!! We love you so much!!
‘Til next time…
